Well, here I am being faithful (though late) with my meal plan for you to copy or get inspiration from. I just shopped today (though I usually shop on Tuesday because my grocery store has 15% off on the first Tuesday of every month and if I ordinarily shop on Tuesday, I'm certain not to miss it). But I started the meal plan this week yesterday because, well, that's where I left off last week.

Leftover Turkey Noodle Soup.
It was delicious the first time. It was even better as leftovers... Why, you ask? Well, the answer is two-fold. Letting a soup or other multi-ingredient dish sit allows the flavours to mingle and "develop" and you often get a tastier soup/chili/stew the day after. ... Big deal that mine was a week later. It still tasted good. Second reason... NO WORK! Wahoo, just throw it on the stove for 10 minutes and it's warm and edible. You can even knit while you wait!

Hamburgers (from store-bought frozen patties) with buns (store-bought again) and homemade salsa with tortillas.
I bought tomatoes and cilantro to put on my hamburgers. It's super tasty on hamburgers. And when I was buying one tomato for my burger, the roma tomatoes looked soooo yummy and shiny and firm and red, that I had to pick up a jalapeno and make some home made salsa to go with (which I better get working on soon). I will also serve some crudite (fresh cut up veggies), as this keeps my kids happy while they wait for supper.

Stuffed pasta (store-bought) with pasta sauce (store-bought... noticing a theme this week?) and caesar salad. The pasta was on sale and it looked different and yummy and easy.

Broccoli Soup with rolls
I will make cream of broccoli soup from scratch. My kids like it and eat it. I figured I needed at least one home made wholesome meal in there and broccoli was on sale this week.

Lasagna (store-bought frozen) with caesar salad and garlic bread (store-bought)
Normally I would make lasagna, because that's what you do, you make lasagna. Who buys lasagna? I'll tell you who... people who can do some quick math...
mozzarella cheese: $8.99 (ok, I wouldn't use the whole thing, but probably half): $4.50
ground beef: (I buy this in larger packages and freeze it, but probably at least) $3.00
lasagna noodles: (I don't have these kicking around and honestly, I didn't get past cheese and meat in my math, so I didn't even look at the price of lasagna noodles. I buy whole wheat pasta, so for noodles I'd say I'm looking at at least): $3.00
sauce, onions, peppers, spices: at least another $3.00
I found a pan of frozen lasagna that will feed my family, probably with leftovers for $4.99
Seriously, people, $4.99... that's just the CHEESE if it were making it myself. Sometimes we need to look at what we're doing and if it really makes sense. Honestly, I didn't look at the sodium content (not that I would really be able to compare it with anything because it's not like my recipe has a sodium content listed), but it's not like lasagna is ordinarily a "healthy" meal, right?

Omlettes with bacon and toast, fresh veggies and fruit
I need easy and light things on Sunday. Dan doesn't eat a lot before church and it's just easier if I don't have to start cooking dinner at 2:00.
Monday, October 27, 2008
I had originally planned frozen meat pies (store-bought) because they were on sale 6 for $4.99, which I thought was a good deal, but my store is crappily stocked, so I couldn't find any and since I had already asked for help finding 3 other things, I just gave up on the meat pies, and bought a frozen pizza instead. There will be no complaining about this choice at my house.
So there we have it. Maybe I outdid myself last week making all sorts of things from scratch and roast this and that dinners with potatoes and fixings. It was a good week, but I need a break this week and this is it. Sometimes you just have to acknowledge that you need a bit of a break and plan for it with store-bought stuff that's easy instead of having good intentions that you don't follow through on. Then you've bought ingredients for meals you're not going to make AND you eat pizza all week. You can still eat from home and take a break sometimes. Oh, and by the way, this store-bought week did not break my budget. If you include my run to the store on Monday night for some much needed fruit, bread and milk, I'm well within my $100-$125/week range.
